Introduction
Meet Vanessa Lee Abraham – Glass & Alcohol Ink Artist
Starting later in life, Vanessa unexpectedly discovered her creative side. After dabbling in digital art, she quickly moved on to more hands-on mediums, finding a true connection with fused glass and alcohol ink art. Inspired by her artistic mother and woodworking father, she eventually followed in their footsteps, even if it took years to do so. Great things happened as the result of a simple gift of homemade coasters and a glass jewelry kit that set her on a new path to beautiful artworks, where she began to explore these mediums and their unique effects with curiosity and determination.
Her work is inspired by all things spiritual, by the micro and macro of the universe. She describes her glass pieces as galaxies or stones you might find in a transcendental place and the inks like otherworldly landscapes or even seascapes. Sometimes the pieces make her think she is looking under a microscope in a fairy-like or angelic realm.
Artistic Origins:
Vicki: Can you share a story of what drew you to your chosen medium and how your artistic journey began?
Vanessa: I only started exploring my artistic side when I reached my forties. Initially, I experimented with digital art using a couple of apps that helped me overcome my fear of making mistakes, thanks to the “undo” button. However, I didn’t stick with digital art for long. I tried other mediums through various workshops, but it wasn’t until I received a set of beautiful homemade coasters from my creative and crafty aunt that I discovered alcohol inks. Around the same time, my sister-in-law introduced me to the art of fusing glass to make jewelry. I saw a few of her stunning pieces over a video chat and was immediately intrigued. She surprised me with a starter kit, and after my first firing, I was hooked.
Pivotal Moments:
Vicki: Is there a pivotal moment or experience in your life that influenced your art?
Vanessa: I wouldn’t say there was a single pivotal moment, but rather a lifelong influence from having an artistic mother and a creative father. Growing up, there was always a project going on at the table or in the workshop. Colored pencils, charcoals, pastels, paints, or stained glass supplies were never far from my mom while my dad was often making creative gifts using his woodworking skills. There was a time though, when I found myself questioning my own creativity and wondering why I hadn’t inherited their talent. Perhaps that self-reflection is what finally pushed me to challenge myself and explore my own potential.
Creative Process:
Vicki: Could you walk us through your creative process? How do you transform an initial idea into a finished piece?
Vanessa: Working with both inks and glass requires an artist to relinquish a certain degree of control. I find this aspect very meditative, as it keeps me in the present moment and encourages me to listen to my heart with each decision I make. This process makes me feel deeply connected to the divine.
Selecting the colors and textures that initially catch my eye greatly influences the final result, but the process often takes unexpected turns. With inks, I’ve learned to tune in and follow their natural flow, often feeling drawn to add additional colors as each layer develops.
When working with glass, I begin by cutting and arranging the pieces to form an initial design. However, the melting process, which happens unseen, unpredictable. I continue adding more glass and usually refire the piece multiple times until it feels just right. The final stage of both processes is more about being a curator. I rely on an intuitive sense to guide the final touches, carefully considering when a piece is aesthetically pleasing enough to be introduced to the world.
Meaningful Creations:
Vicki: Is there a piece you’ve created that is particularly meaningful to you? What’s the story behind it?
Vanessa: I decided to try my hand at inking a view of Overlook in the Cascade Valley Metro Park to submit for the Akron on Deck II project. This project, facilitated by Art x Love, showcases local artists’ interpretations of places in Akron on playing cards. It was the first time I used photo references to paint with inks, and I was pleasantly surprised with the result, even though it felt unnatural to force the inks to cooperate. I was thrilled when my painting was selected to be the 4 of Clubs. The Overlook loop is a path I’ve walked many times with loved ones, and it always reminds me of the natural beauty of this area. Creating this piece was a meaningful way to celebrate a special place not far from my childhood home. I feel incredibly fortunate to live in Akron with so many beautiful natural spots, like Overlook, so close by.
Future Aspirations:
Vicki: Looking forward, what are your aspirations or dreams for your future as an artist?
Vanessa: I never imagined that finding something I love to do, which is also therapeutic, would grow into what it has become today. When people began to recognize my endeavors as art and encouraged me to make more pieces available, it was a wonderful feeling. Knowing that my creations were finding homes and that I could earn extra money to buy supplies and even build a home studio has been incredibly fulfilling. I am so grateful to have the freedom to create whenever inspiration strikes. This process has been both beneficial and meditative for me, and seeing it bring joy to others is already a dream come true.
My aspirations are to continue evolving as an artist by exploring new techniques and experimenting with various types and sizes of canvases. I’ve been thinking about seeking more commission opportunities and, eventually, finding other ways to share my artwork. I’m excited to see where this creative journey will take me.
Vicki: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your art, experiences, or perspectives we haven’t covered?
Vanessa: Sharing these mediums with others is incredibly rewarding. It’s not only a lot of fun, but I love encouraging and helping people to tap into their own creativity. Making art has a magical impact on the soul, and inspiring others to connect with their artistic flow sparks a light within; it’s a transformative experience for everyone, especially in a group setting. This is my why behind offering workshops on both alcohol inks and fused glass. I have facilitated these experiences both publicly and privately in a variety of settings.
