Mastering Pottery Techniques Through a Journey of Mindfulness
Introduction
Meet Cathy Young, the creative mind behind Young Cat Pottery. Her creative journey began with a lockdown obsession and a reality show binge. Cathy soon found herself in pottery class, learning unique techniques used in pottery and discovering that clay offered more than an artistic outlet. Cathy’s work invites us into her peaceful, intentional process centered on joy and discovery.

Artistic Origins:
Vicki: “Can you share a story of what drew you to your chosen medium and how your artistic journey began?”
Cathy: During Lockdown, I found four seasons of a reality show called The Great Pottery Throwdown. A typical Reality show but it was Potters vying to be named “The Best Potter in the UK’. I was obsessed and signed up to take a Ceramics class at the Canton Museum of Art.
Pivotal Moments:
Vicki: “Is there a pivotal moment or experience in your life that influenced your art?”
Cathy: Sometimes when I was a kid, I picked up the notion that to be a real ‘Grown-up’, I had to give up play and fun. It was a beautiful moment for my spirit when I realized I was allowed to create and have fun making beautiful pieces.
Creative Process:
Vicki: “Could you walk us through your creative process? How do you transform an initial idea into a finished piece?”
Cathy: The best pottery is made when the Potter is intentional and methodical. I love that making good pieces demands that I am centered, quiet, and peaceful. Working with clay is my daily meditation.
Meaningful Creations:
Vicki: “Is there a piece you’ve created that is particularly meaningful to you? What’s the story behind it?”
Cathy: My “Bill and Dr. Bob’s Coffee Shop’ mugs make me smile. A cheeky nod to AA’s history in Akron.
Future Aspirations:
Vicki: “Looking forward, what are your aspirations or dreams for your future as an artist?”
Cathy: Like any good medium, after the basics are learned the possibilities are endless. Where am I going to end up only time will tell! Maybe teaching pottery classes or making my own glazes is next.

Vicki: “How can someone contact you to purchase your art?”
