What can you do with Momigami paper? Great question. The Momigami technique makes fun use of all types of paper and offers endless creations. See how to make this Momigami paper Matchbook/notebook. This is a list of creations I want to try: gift wrapping, bookmaking, junk journals, lampshades, collages, jewelry, handmade cards, book covers, and even wallets, as you can use your sewing machine for a whole other category of creations!

Let's take a look at what makes Momigami so special.

The Art and Versatility of Momigami

Momigami is not just a craft; it's an ancient Japanese art form deeply rooted in the principles of simplicity, sustainability, and creativity. Its versatility allows for an extensive range of applications beyond the already mentioned uses. Consider incorporating Momigami into home decor, fashion accessories, or even as a medium for expressive art pieces. The texture and durability of Momigami make it an excellent choice for creating unique, eco-friendly, and personal items that reflect your own style.

Just about any type of paper, from mulberry paper to tissue paper, handmade paper, or affordable machine-made papers, you can create the most interesting thing with one of the three Momigami techniques.

Momigami Techniques Explored

Each Momigami technique has its unique qualities:

  • Konnyaku starch: Adds strength and flexibility. Ideal for durable items like book covers.
  • Oils (Vegetable, Olive, Baby): These give a subtle sheen and are water-resistant. I hear they're perfect for lampshades, but I have never tried this option or project.
  • Hand Lotions: Imparts softness and a pleasant tactile quality. Great for stationery.

As I mentioned, there are numerous creative projects you can do with the Momigami papers you’ve made. This post will detail how to make one of my favorite things: a matchbook-style notebook. This matchbook-style notebook can be made in many different ways and with many different papers. But for now, the Momigami papers are a great way to utilize these fun and decorative papers.

Let's get started

What to do with Momigami Paper.

You will need only a few minimal materials. I love to keep my projects simple and not overly complicated.

Adjustments sometimes need to be made based on each particular project:

The Momigami paper I am working with today was from the "How to Make Momigami Paper." Original size: 8 1/2” x 11” paper.   After the Momigami technique: 8 ¼” x 10 ½”

I learned an important lesson about using your Momigami paper. The final Momigami paper shrinks—at least mine did using the Momigami hand lotion technique. Keep this in mind as you move forward with other DIY projects using Momigami paper.

Here are a few points to remember as you begin your project:

(A downloadable detailed guide for creating this project is at the end of this post.)

  1. Materials: Adjust sizes based on Momigami’s shrinkage—experiment with the types of paper for the cover, inside decorative cover, and writing papers.
  2. Folding and Scoring: Use a bone folder for sharp, professional folds or anything that provides a crisp, clean fold.
  3. Binding: Depending on the thickness of your notebook, a stapler should work great to bind your writing papers.
  4. Customize Your Notebook:
    1. Personalize with stamps or natural dyes.
    2. Decorate with pieces of other Momigami papers.
    3. Create tear-out sheets for coupons or reminders.
  5. Advanced Project Ideas:
    1. Mixed Media Art: Integrate Momigami into mixed media projects for added texture and depth.
    2. Collage Techniques: Use Momigami in collages, combining different textures and colors for striking effects.
