Meet Tim O’Daniel, a geometric and nature abstract artist. I first saw Tim’s work on Facebook as he posted his creations. I found his form of abstract art intriguing and beautiful. Artistic origins

Me: Can you share a story of what drew you to your chosen medium and how your artistic journey began?

Tim: I took as many art classes as possible in high school. I gravitated towards mechanical drawing and drafting. I also took a silk-screening course. After high school, I started working and found it difficult to devote time to my artwork. I began drawing abstract pieces in my spare time mainly because I had trouble with realism and freehand sketching. My renditions of animals and people were a running joke among my family and friends, so I stuck with what I knew I was good at, abstract.

Pivotal Moments

Me: Is there a pivotal moment or experience in your life that influenced your art?

Tim: The only pivotal moment was just a few years ago when I realized retirement was approaching, and wanted to see if I could earn some supplemental income once I decided to retire. I ramped up my designs and began creating my best work.

Creative Process

Me: Could you walk us through your creative process of how you transform an initial idea into a finished piece?

Tim: It’s a bit complicated, and sometimes it’s easier to show the process visually, but it involves cutting out various shapes, replicating them, and placing them on a whiteboard. Then, I use oil-based markers to add color and depth. I then take a photo of the piece and use the image to make more copies, cut more, and create a montage. Once I get the desired look, I glue embellishments for the final step. They are then matted and framed.

Meaningful Creations

Me: Is there a piece you've created that is particularly meaningful to you? What's the story behind it?

Tim: My sister asked me to draw a B&W tree for their new house. We both knew I would struggle with creating art from living things, but I went home and attempted some prototypes. I eventually came up with an abstract concept of that tree, and ever since, I’ve added abstract trees to my collection.

Next Phase

Me: Looking forward, what are your aspirations or dreams for your future as an artist?

Tim: Considering I’m nearing retirement, I’m just content to create my artwork as an enjoyable hobby, and if I can earn a few bucks, all the better.

Me: Is there anything else you'd like to share about your art, experiences, or perspectives we haven't covered?

Tim: As with many amateur artists, my style has evolved somewhat over the years, and I believe some of my best pieces are what I’m doing now.

Conclusion

Me: How can someone contact you to purchase your art? 

Tim: My Facebook page currently has some of my art haphazardly mixed with my personal posts. I’m planning on adding a business Facebook account soon. I’ve had some issues with selling my art through Facebook to individuals I have never met who live in various places that require shipping. If possible, I’d like to keep sales locally. If I could participate in local events, that would be my preference. I currently have a solo exhibit at White Rabbit Galleries in Barberton and frequently rent wall space there for some of my creations. I also entered a juried exhibit at the Ohio Art League in Columbus slated for May 2024.
